Purpose

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." --Henry David Thoreau

The word deliberately means to consider carefully, intentional. Another word for deliberate is purpose. Henry David Thoreau in the above quote simply meant, he wants to consider his life carefully, live it intentionally so that his life serves a purpose. Ultimately, I believe he wants to live on purpose for his Creator. There is nothing in this world to live intentional for other than the God of this universe. Having the desire to live intentionally brings me to the conclusion that he has the fear of God in his heart. The end of his quote also brings me to the next conclusion; when he sees his day of judgment, he wants his account of his life to be well pleasing to the Lord, and desires to hear “well done my good and faithful servant.”
This may be debatable to some people, but fearing God is all I know in my heart is to why someone desires to live intentional and with purpose. Ever sense 2007 when I became a new believer, my world view changed. When I think of the word intentional I think of Jesus Christ and his intentional love he showed us on the cross. I also think about, how God loves us so much he intentionally sent his Son for our sins. He did that all so that we could have a relationship with God. The question comes to mind -how can I be intentional for God and show the same love? The answer I have is faith in his Son Jesus Christ. When I hear the word purpose, I know the only purpose I have is to serve the Kingdom of God. The question “what should I do with my life” is really unanswerable and heavy; until you can realize that you were made for God and that your purpose is for God. From my life experience, when you reach this point, is when you can answer that question and start living deliberately.
Do I live deliberately? The bible commands us to live with purpose. It would be a lie if I told yes, every day I do live intentionally. My spirit battles my flesh day to day. I go to bed praying that tomorrow I would see what the Lord’s will is for me for that day. Sometimes I completely live in my own destructive ways. So my answer, I try to live out the purpose God gave me which is to obey and love the Lord. The only way I know how to stay in obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ, and to be pleasing to God is by reading the bible consistently, and praying continually. It helps me to write my prayers down; this shows me how I lived with purpose in the past. Also, writing my prayers allows me to remember the past and how the Lord has worked in my life. I commit myself to the strive of living deliberately. So when my day of judgment comes, I will hear the sweet words of my King “well done my good and faithful servant, well done my precious daughter, I am pleased!”
